The Hunt Showdown game is currently celebrating its 5th anniversary with a big sale and a new hunter DLC. While there is much to remember, Crytek is looking to the future and plans to upgrade Hunt from the legacy CryEngine 5.6 to the latest version 5.11. “The game is currently running on an outdated version of CryEngine from four years ago,” explained David Fifield, general manager of Crytek. “Therefore, one of our main messages in 2023 will be to upgrade to the latest version of CryEngine 5.11, which is four years newer.” Upgrading the engine from one decimal to a slightly higher decimal doesn’t seem like a big change, but it’s a much bigger undertaking than updating your phone’s firmware. It’s extremely rare for a game with a long history and a well-established development system to replace the base it sits on – it’s the equivalent of replacing your car’s chassis with a new one that’s theoretically better but can create new problems. Epic brought Fortnite to Unreal Engine 5 last year with impressive results. Ideally, the 5.11 Hunt update will bring improvements to the game’s already outstanding graphics, but also promises to bring gameplay improvements (although Crytek didn’t offer any examples). “It’s going to be a long technical journey, so people shouldn’t expect it anytime soon, but it’s on its way. As we move forward and reach significant milestones, we’ll be talking more and more about what it means to move the game from CryEngine 5.6 to CryEngine 5.11 ‘ Fifield said. While this major update is still a long way off, players can look forward to many more updates, including a tool rework for new players. “We’re working on improving the tutorial and creating a more scripted tutorial mission with more explanation and what we would say is simply better tutorial than existing tutorial missions.” Crytek’s mission to keep Hunt: Showdown technologically relevant suggests that the company will continue to work on a loot-filled dark western in the coming years. We might not have heard about the engine upgrade if, for example, Hunt 2 was in development or Crytek was phasing out support. Which is quite logical for the team, because Fifield talks about the annual growth of the player base of the game. “We’re interested to see how much the population grows, engagement and everything else.” Last month’s Devil’s Moon event, which saw entire cards on fire among other things, showed Crytek’s willingness to tweak the fundamentals of Hunt and keep players on their toes.
