© Final Fantasy XVI has already been at the center of controversy due to its apparent lack of ethnic diversity, and the topic has returned to stir up controversy in the community following Naoki Yoshida’s recent statements to The Verge. Several months have passed since the first wave of complaints from the community about the inclusivity of Final Fantasy XVI, accused of favoring the presence of white Caucasian characters. At the time, Yoshida elaborated that the game was set in medieval Europe and that the presence of black characters would be against the narrative structure. So Ash Parrish of The Verge was curious to know that in the face of the feedback received from the community, Square Enix somehow changed or enriched the composition of the action game with characters from different ethnic groups. “I believe that in Final Fantasy XVI we weave together many peoples and cultures in this vast fantasy world and storytelling that we strive to create with care and respect,” said Naoki Yoshida. “We hope that when players finally get to experience the game for themselves, they will see what we were aiming for and hopefully end up enjoying this unique experience.” The action game’s producer also added that “over-inclusion” of people of color “would break the narrative boundaries” of the project, and in his response to the sequel, Parrish listed the various peoples and cultures that the development team included in the project. Introducing the game, the producer talked about the various kingdoms and factions vying for control of the all-powerful Mother Crystals. While Yoshida’s response wasn’t particularly forthright, it does seem to confirm that Square Enix hasn’t changed its plans after the controversy caused by those who demanded more ethnic diversity in Final Fantasy XVI.
